On November 24, 2024, the Armenian Missionary Association of Canada (AMAC) hosted a breathtaking benefit concert in Toronto, titled “Together for the Armenians of Lebanon.” Organized to mark AMAC’s 40th anniversary, this inspiring event aimed to raise critical funds to support Armenians in Lebanon, who are grappling with the compounded challenges of relentless bombings, runaway inflation, and an overwhelming sense of insecurity.

The Armenian Youth Center’s Hamazkayin Theatre served as the evening’s venue, welcoming over 350 attendees who were soon enraptured by an unforgettable showcase of Armenian artistry. The audience’s anticipation filled the air, weaving together a shared spirit of compassion and unity.

Dr. Ani Hasserjian, serving as the Master of Ceremonies, set the tone for the evening with heartfelt words that reminded the audience of the wisdom of Jesus: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Her message underscored the concert’s mission, inspiring all present to reflect on the power of collective giving.

Zohrab Sarkissian, Intern Pastor of the Armenian Evangelical Church of Toronto, began the event with a moving prayer of gratitude and hope. He thanked God for His blessings and sought divine favor for the success of the evening, grounding the audience in faith and purpose.

The highlight of the evening was the mesmerizing performance by Spyurki Dzayn, a renowned vocal quartet featuring Nver Ghazaryan, Leon Lev Karagulian, Sevag Haroutunian, Toros Maydossian, and Seyran Ghazaryan on the duduk. Their soulful renditions of Armenian favorites resonated deeply, weaving a rich musical tapestry that transported the audience to the heart of Armenian heritage.

Adding to the evening’s allure was the extraordinary talent of Toronto’s celebrated guitarist Levon Ishkhanian and his daughter, Taline. Their harmonious melodies further enriched the program, creating a poignant connection between generations of Armenian artistry.

The Hamazkayin Erepuni Dance Ensemble graced the stage with their vibrant performances, their movements painting stories of cultural pride and resilience. Each dance captivated the audience, celebrating the beauty and strength of Armenian traditions.

A deeply touching moment of the evening was dedicated to honoring Mr. Sarkis Marandjian, whose generous sponsorship, in loving memory of his cherished wife, Haygouhie Marandjian, was instrumental in the event’s success. In recognition of his steadfast support and dedication to the Armenian community, AMAC presented him with a certificate of appreciation. Dr. Ani Hasserjian read the certificate aloud, expressing heartfelt gratitude, and invited AMAC founding member Mr. Antibas Loussarian to present it to Mr. Marandjian, making the occasion even more memorable for all in attendance.

Dr. Hasserdjian shared with the audience a congratulatory note from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, sent on the occasion of AMAC’s 40th anniversary, followed by a heartfelt letter of congratulations from Ontario Member of Parliament Aris Babikian.

The audience was also treated to a poignant documentary film on the Armenian Evangelical Secondary School of Anjar. This AMAC-supported institution not only provides exceptional education but also serves as a sanctuary for destitute children through its boarding school. Despite enduring days of unrelenting fear as the areas surrounding Anjar were heavily bombed, the school’s resilience shines brightly. It stands as a beacon of hope, offering both education and refuge in the face of adversity.

The auditorium erupted in a tidal wave of applause, a crescendo of gratitude and admiration that echoed through the evening. The two-and-a-half-hour journey into the vibrant world of Armenian art left an indelible impression, reminding everyone of the transformative power of music and unity.

The success of this extraordinary evening was made possible by the tireless efforts of the organizing committee, led by the visionary leadership of Dr. Ani Hasserjian. AMAC extends its heartfelt gratitude to Sona Hovsepyan (Artistic Director), Ruth Demirjian-Duench, Betty Krajian, Darren Getzoyan, Khatchig Ohannessian, Khoren Mardoyan, Remy Guirguis, Zela Sarmazian Kakousian, Ara Ter-Haroutunian, Harout Nercessian and Rosaline Zeitounilian. Their unwavering dedication and hard work ensured that the concert not only touched hearts but also brought invaluable aid to our compatriots in Lebanon.

This remarkable evening was more than a concert; it was a testament to the enduring strength of Armenian culture and the boundless compassion of a community united in purpose. Together, we affirmed our commitment to standing with the Armenians of Lebanon, turning music into a beacon of hope.
